The Grenada Hotel & Tourism Association Receives Recognition from World ACR Rally Organizers

On Tuesday, 26 March, 2013, the Grenada Hotel & Tourism Association (GHTA) was the proud recipient of a plaque, signed by all the skippers visiting Grenada on their penultimate stop in the world renowned World ARC Rally, before sailing on to St. Lucia. This year saw the 3rd edition of the race which to date has been held bi-yearly however, due to its popularity with the skippers, the organizers plan to make it an annual event.

The plaque was given to the GHTA as a token of appreciation for support given by its members, and the work undertaken by staff members which help to make the Grenada end of the race a success. Staff members Clevon J. Noel, IT Officer, Sharnel Edwards, Administration Assistant and Pancy Cross, Executive Director, on receiving the token award on behalf of the GHTA thanked the organizers and commended their efforts in building the rally into a world class sailing race in a very short time.

The World ARC is a round-the world, port-to-port adventure which starts its first leg in St. Lucia, and goes through the Panama Canal on its way to Australia from which country the second leg begins. The race takes place over 15 months and covers 26, 000 nautical miles. Sailors may choose to make a full circumnavigation or sail half a rally. Sailors leaving the race after completing half the rally may join the next edition to complete their circumnavigation. The pace of the rally allows the fleet to stay together, and to enjoy shore-side activities as a group at various ports of call..

On March 15 the first boat in the fleet, The Gunvor XL sailed into Camper & Nicholson’s Port Louis Marina and was greeted by a warm Grenadian welcome. Over the next 6 days Grenada welcomed a further 20 boats. A total of 75 crew members from a wide range of countries enjoyed many on shore adventures during their fortnight stay on the island. They were free to decide where and what they would do and many explored not only Grenada, but visited our sister isles of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Event manager, Paul Tetlow, pointed out to persons on hand to welcome the boats that, “Grenada was the ideal stopping point for sailors because of the geographic location and the wide range of yachting services and facilities”.

The GHTA would like to thank its member properties Flamboyant Hotel & Villas, Trueblue Bay Resort & Villas, and Coyaba Beach Resort for accommodating the organizing team during their stay in Grenada, particularly as they went out of their way to do so in what has been a busy period for them.
