GHTA Statement on the Passing of the Honorable Gordon “Butch” Stewart, OJ, CD. Hon. LLD.

St. George’s, Grenada W.I. - 7th January, 2021—The GHTA mourns the passing of the Caribbean tourism legend, the Honorable Gordon “Butch” Stewart, OJ, CD. Hon. LLD. Our industry will miss this man who thrived on excellence and brought tourism throughout the Caribbean to another level. Butch Stewart was the founder, owner and chairman of Sandals Resorts, Beaches Resorts and their parent company Sandals Resorts International, as well as The ATL Group and its subsidiaries Appliance Traders and the Jamaica Observer. He was known as the “King of All Inclusive- Resorts” and the “Master of Marketing” and through his ownership of Sandals Resort in Grenada, helped to propel the local tourism economy as well as being a big supporter of the GHTA.

The GHTA will forever be indebted to “Butch” for his adherence to excellence and hospitality as well as for his passion for the development of people and local communities. Through much of his efforts, Grenadian airlift has increased further enhancing the Grenadian tourism product. Butch Stewart was a giant of a man and an inspiration to many who mentored people to dream big and work hard to achieve those dreams. “Big is good, bigger is better, but overkill is best!”

Butch Stewart left an indelible mark in Grenada, across the region and the world and will be forever missed. The GHTA extends warmest condolences to his family, friends and to his countless staff for the loss of this Caribbean icon.
